Case Study — Food
Converting a Liquid Extract to Powder with Centrifugal Spray Drying
Food-grade liquid extract
The Challenge
A food ingredient manufacturer wanted to convert a liquid extract into a stable, free-flowing powder suitable for packaging and long-term storage, without a separate crushing or screening step, and while limiting thermal exposure during the brief drying period.
The Solution
An LPG centrifugal spray dryer was specified with atomizer disc sizing matched to the customer's feed viscosity and target particle size. Inlet air temperature and disc rotation speed were tuned during commissioning to achieve the desired bulk density and moisture specification directly out of the drying chamber and cyclone separator.
Project Process
- Evaluated the liquid extract's viscosity, solids content, and target powder characteristics
- Specified an LPG centrifugal spray dryer with an appropriately sized atomizer disc
- Tuned inlet/outlet air temperature and disc speed during commissioning
- Verified powder recovery rate and moisture content against the customer's specification
