Planning the Dryer Room: Height, Access and Utilities

November 4, 2026Ruibo Dryer Engineering

Clear height, doorway width, floor allowance and utility headers decide which dryer can be installed. Read the dimensional columns before the thermal ones.

The room is part of the specification

A dryer that will not pass through the door or stand under the roof beam is the wrong dryer, whatever its heat-transfer area. Four site figures decide that before any thermal calculation: clear height, the transport route, the floor or steelwork allowance, and the utility headers. Measure them before a model is quoted, because each one can remove a whole series from the shortlist.

The specification tables answer the thermal question and the dimensional one in the same place, but most buyers read only the first. Height, overall length or shell diameter and, for some series, total weight sit beside heat-transfer area and drive power in the same table, so the installation check costs nothing extra once a candidate model exists. What the tables cannot supply is the room, and that is the half of the decision the plant owns.

Clear height: read the tallest point, not the vessel

Overall height is a fixed column in the Ruibo specification tables and it spans 762 mm on a small hollow-blade unit to 10,650 mm on the largest plate stack. A plant with a 6 m ceiling can therefore take any batch vacuum dryer in the range, and almost no large continuous one.

Height grows slowly with capacity in a batch vessel and quickly in a vertical stack. The SZG double-cone series covers 100 to 5000 L between 1640 and 4225 mm, a factor of 50 in volume against 2.6 in height. The DZG rises from 3565 to 6160 mm across 500 to 4000 L. The KJG holds 762 to 1778 mm across the eight models whose height the table states, 0.06 to 2.8 m³ of effective volume, because its heat-transfer surface sits in the blades rather than in the shell. The PLG takes the opposite route: 2608 mm at 3.3 m² of plate area, 10,650 mm at 180 m², since every additional plate is one more layer of building height.

Access: the largest single dimension sets the route

What has to pass a doorway is the largest dimension of the largest piece, and for a horizontal machine that is the length rather than the footprint. KJG total length runs from 1956 mm on the KJG-2.7 to 9119 mm on the KJG-95, and SZG overall length from 1595 to 4600 mm.

Vertical machines invert the constraint. The DZG stands 3565 to 6160 mm tall, so its route is a height problem rather than a width problem. The PLG is assembled as a stack of plates inside a shell whose outer diameter is 1850 mm on the 1200 base, 2100 mm on the 1500, 2900 mm on the 2200 and 3800 mm on the 3000, which means the widest piece and the tallest piece are the same assembly.

Weight decides the lifting plan rather than the doorway. Total weight is stated for the SZG series, 650 kg on the SZG-0.1 and 8800 kg on the SZG-5.0, and net weight for the DZG, 1350 kg to 4450 kg. The KJG and PLG tables carry dimensions without a weight column, so those two figures have to be requested before a crane is booked.

Utilities: three headers to confirm before the order

A jacketed vacuum dryer asks the site for three things: a heating medium at a stated pressure and temperature, an electrical supply for the drive, and a vacuum system able to hold the vessel rating. Each has a number in the product data that the site has to match or exceed, and the largest model in a series sets the requirement.

Pressure comes first. The ZPG jacket is designed for 0.3 MPa, while PLG plates are rated 0.4 MPa generally and 1.6 MPa maximum. Temperature follows the medium rather than the model: the SZG jacket runs 20 to 160 °C on hot water, low-pressure steam or thermal oil, the KJG carries medium at −40 to 320 °C through hollow blades and shaft, and PLG plates take hot water below 100 °C, steam at 100 to 150 °C or oil at 150 to 320 °C.

Vacuum and power come second. The ZPG vessel is rated −0.096 to 0.15 MPa, which is the limit the site vacuum system has to reach and hold. Drive power spans 1.1 to 15 kW on the SZG, 11 to 37 kW on the DZG, 2.2 to 90 kW on the KJG and 1.1 to 15 kW on the PLG, and the top of each range is the figure that sizes the starter and the cable, not the average.

Discharge height sets the floor under the machine

Batch vacuum dryers empty from the bottom, so the vessel has to sit above whatever receives the product. The specification tables give machine height but not the clearance beneath it, and that clearance is fixed by the discharge valve, the receiver and the route to the next process.

On the PLG, dried material leaves the last plate and is discharged at the shell bottom by the rake blades. On the KJG, a discharge gate with a weir plate holds the material level that keeps the heat-transfer surface covered, so the gate and its actuator occupy the space directly under the trough. Settle the receiver height and the foundation in the same drawing, because adding height after the machine is set is a structural change rather than an adjustment.

What to send with the enquiry

Five measurements turn an enquiry into a specification that can be quoted without a second site visit, and they belong in the first message rather than after the model has been chosen.

  • Clear height measured under the beam, duct or pipe rack, not up to the ceiling slab.
  • The narrowest opening on the route in, plus every corner the machine has to turn.
  • Floor loading allowance, or the steelwork drawing if the dryer stands on a platform.
  • Heating medium, its pressure and its temperature at the header, plus the electrical supply available.
  • Discharge arrangement: receiver height, valve type and where the product goes next.

Questions buyers ask about installation

These come up in most installation reviews. Each answer stays inside what the product data states, because the room, not the catalogue, is what limits the choice.

Does a taller dryer dry faster?
No. Height follows the geometry that carries heat-transfer surface, not the drying rate. The tallest KJG figure in the tables is 1778 mm on the KJG-41, while the largest model in that series carries 110 m² of blade area. A PLG 3000/30 stands 10,650 mm tall to carry 180 m² of plate area. Area and temperature difference set the rate; height is what the area costs in building space.
Can the machine be split for transport?
The specification tables do not state a transport split. Where the route is tight, ask for the shipping breakdown before the order: KJG total length reaches 9119 mm, PLG outer diameter 3800 mm on the 3000 base, and SZG overall length 4600 mm on the SZG-5.0. Those are the three figures that decide whether a wall has to come out.
What vacuum level does the site system have to reach?
The ZPG vessel is rated −0.096 to 0.15 MPa, so that is the limit the pump has to reach and hold against in-leakage. The pump is then sized on vapour duty at the evaporation rate rather than on evacuation alone, which is why the rating and the duty have to be quoted together.
Which model has the largest electrical demand?
The KJG-110 at 90 kW. The ZPG series reaches 22 kW, the DZG 37 kW, and the SZG and PLG both stop at 15 kW. On a site with a limited supply the drive power range, not the model number, is the first column to read.
Is a low ceiling an absolute limit?
It removes the vertical plate stack first. The shortest PLG configuration is 2608 mm tall and carries 3.3 m² of plate area, while a batch vessel of comparable area has a different geometry altogether. Height therefore narrows the series before it rules out the duty.

Where this leaves the layout

Measure the room before the shortlist, not after it. Height, route, weight and utilities each cut a series out of the list, and all four are cheaper to check than to change later.

The dimensional columns of the specification tables are the source for every figure here; the product pages below carry them per model.
